Best place on the whole Mall is between the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Washington Monument - It's the Declaration of Independence Signers Memorial. It's a nice place to walk around..
The Mall as locals call it is a must see because a lot of people go there& a lot of the best museums are located there.If you can catch the fireworks for the 4th of July,do it.It's like no place else

Favorite. Sculpture garden and multi-level modern art museum in the heart of the mall; usually overlooked since few people can figure out the entrance. Worth the detour.

To avoid the field trip crowds, enter from the mall entrance not the one on constitution. The mall entrance is always less crowded.

One of the few scenic areas near the mall that isn't typically overrun by tourists and children.
This is, obviously, a good starting point for the national mall. Friendly staff help you get your bearings, and there is free wifi to check email and stuff.

The Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum houses the original shooting model of the USS Enterprise from TV's Star Trek series in the lower level of the gift shop in the National Mall building.
Use the Independence Ave entrance (the back side--not the one on the Mall). The lines are much shorter!
