If you're heading to the beach to play volleyball, the courts next to the pier are the best. Pier blocks the wind and these courts have lights. ;)

A great beach in LA because its big - just about a mile long from the Washington pier to the jetty - wide, fairly clean, has parking & bathrooms, and most of all - it is rarely crowded.
Nice quiet beach and only steps from the Venice boardwalk. Better to park at the end of Washington by the pier to avoid the crowd at Venice. Also near Abbot Kinney

The patio is one of the better places to sit and listen to Pier concerts. Poor sightlines, but a good beer selection, OK food, and haz benches.

This location is cool because there is actually a shot of the pier in the movie. However they don't have any sense of urgency, which is necessary considering the amount of people who visit the pier.

You have to come early if you want to have a really nice spot on the beach. The Boardwalk and Pier are really great for sightseeing and strolling!
Enjoy all the shops & restaurants early, before all the crowds arrive. Bring or rent a bike. Take a trip down the boardwalk to The Venice Pier by MDR or towards SaMo.

I'm not a big mall guy, but the renovations they made here and how they turned it into an outdoor mall, attached to the 3rd street Promenade and only a few blocks from the Pier make it a great place.
